Default Case 1: Whence came the stranger

    Eastlake, Aradan Province, Arathainian Republic
12 Septecalo (The 7th month. Equivalent to July)

The summer sun beats down over the city of Eastlake, baking the city and it’s inhabitants. The summer heat is broken only by the cooler breezes coming off of the massive lake, sparkling in the intense light like a handful of gems.

All over the district of Newburg you hear a cacophony of voices in various languages. From a row of restaurants known all over town as Restaurant Row wafts smells of cooking food in all varieties, all for sale to the hungry consumer. In the heart of the district rests Precinct 8, the guard HQ for the Newburg district.

YOu are sitting in the detective’s bullpen, trying to endure the heat, and glad you dont have to wear the hot guardsman uniforms anymore. Your boss, Gaurd Captain Norman Mylett, Wearing a pristine uniform despite the heat, strides into the room.

“Hey you layabouts! Up and at ‘em. Time to start earring that exorbitant detective’s salary we’re paying you (10 GP a week). You have a case.”

Summer - Jolin's least favorite season, dominated by two of the three things she hates most: bright sunlight and oppressive heat. (The third item on that list, society's predators, are a year-round problem.) She stands near an open window, desperately hoping for a bit of lake-cooled breeze to make its way to her. Despite the bright light flooding through the window, Jolin seems to be standing in an impossibly faint bit of shadow.

The usually tantalizing cacophony of aromas from Restaurant Row assaults her senses, leaving her mildly nauseous, but she stays by the window, knowing that just five feet into the room the temperature will be a few degrees higher. *Is ten gold a week sufficient compensation for all this... this waiting?* she privately ponders, as her eyes and ears seek something, anything of interest out on the street. *I'd rather be active and miserable than desk-bound and ....*

The arrival of Guard Captain Mylett snaps Jolin out of her momentary malaise, and she turns to face her superior. "Details, sir?"

Matthias does the Captain the courtesy of taking his feet of his desk when the man comes in, looking with sympathy at Jolin, knowing that the sun isn't doing her any favors. He stays quiet, waiting on the details that she asked for. As tightly wound as the man was, Mylett usually didn't go in for excess drama so he assumed the particulars were soon to follow. He stifled a yawn, with the back of his hand, convinced that no one civilized keeps these kind of hours.

Cassandra, dressed as lightly as she can manage in all black, has been pacing the room, her hands behind her back, doing her best to ignore the trickle of sweat making its way down her face. Her fox familiar, Mellea, is much less composed, sprawling herself out on the cool stone floor.

When the captain mentions her salary of 10 gold, she smirks - she has reasons other than money to be doing this job, but 10 gold is far better than the salaries of the teeming masses of Eastlake.

"We have a dead human man at the Stranger's Rest Inn. Room 217. Maid found him. We don't have a name yet."
He lays a single sheet of paper on the desk of Mathias, who's seated. "This is the case file. It has the names of the contacts on this case."
    On the paper is:

Victim: Male, White, Human. Found Naked at 1200 hours. COD: Unknown
Contact: Lancelot Chatwyn, Owner Stranger's Rest

Matt reads the paper but then leaves it sitting on the desk as he gets up and retrieves his armor and buckler from the corner. Too hot to go wearing it around in the office but he doesn't go on cases without them. "Alright, you all know I like to get eyes on the scene when it's as fresh as possible so who wants to take first run at the innkeeper?"

Cassandra shakes her head. "I'd rather get a look at the crime scene itself. See what I can suss out."

Matthias shrugs, "That settles it Jo, innkeeper's yours, Zach's gonna have to settle for talking to the staff. No complaining, standard rules of dibs."

YOur captain pauses. "Oh, did you know that there's a premium on solved cases? for every solevd case, thats an additional 200 Gold to your pay. It also goes up the more cases you solve. This way the best detectives have the best gear."

Matthias is on his way out the door but he looks back over his shoulder, "Police shouldn't work on commission, Cap. Bad juju. Don't say I didn't warn you." These last words he calls back as he's already out of the room, assuming the others will catch him up shortly.

"Who put Matthias in charge?" Jolin grumbles as she straps on her armor. "And how many times do I have to tell him not to call me 'Jo'?" She buckles on her rapier as she heads out the door.

Nizdramit quickly moves from where he's been attempting to coax Mellea to play, to where Zachiel is sat, dressed comfortably as usual with his eyes just visible under almost closed eyelids.

The ermine eyes up the slouching man with an expression that anyone watching would almost class as irritation before swiftly nipping Zachiel on the lobe of his ear.

    "Wha... I'm awake!"

Seeing everyone else heading out the room, he quickly follows and moves close to Jolin.

    "What did I miss?"

"There's a naked dead man, like most of these cases," Cassandra replies dryly.

You wind your way through the streets until you reach the relatively towering 4 story building that is the Stranger's Way Inn.
A Doorman in a green uniform approaches you. "Excuse me. No weapons permitted in the lobby."

Matthias shrugged and pushes past the doorman for the door, holding up his badge. "City Watch. You can ask my friends for their weapons, I suppose, but we heard you already have one dead body. Need to see the innkeeper and the room. Also need all the guests in the common room. How many exits out of this building?" Matthias does not carry weapons.

"All of the guests? Sir, I'm just the doorman....Why don't you speak with the owner about that. As for doors, we have this main door here, and a smaller entrance around back used by the staff and delivery people." He hastily opens the door.

What you find yourself in is not an INN, but a HOTEL.
A Large lobby dominates the first floor. Chairs and couches are scattered about the space, and several are filled with guests. On opposite sides of the lobby, an opening reveals a small dining room and a bar. The dining room is half full of patrons enjoying a late lunch, while the bar is currently empty, except for a single dark haired woman, who is cleaning.

At the far end of the room is a massive polished wooden desk with a sign that says "Check-in" dangling above it. Further signs posted nearby inform you of such information as the daily check-out time (9 am) and the aforementioned no weapons in the lobby rule.

Pacing in front of the desk is a heavyset mustachioed human man in his late 30's dressed in fine clothes with a nametag proclaiming him to be "Lancelot Chatwyn, Owner/Manager". Upon seeing your group he hustles over with all the grace of a walrus. "Ah, good. You must be the guard investigators. I am Lancelot Chatwyn, owner of this hotel."

Instead of going in past the doorman, Matthias walks around to the aforementioned back door.

"Mr. Chatwin, I'm Investigator Maevryn. Could you show us to the room, please?" Jolin hopes that the manager locked the room after the discovery. "We'll need to speak with whomever made the discovery, as well." She does her best to keep her tone courteous and professional.

    Mathias:

You walk around the back of the hotel, which takes you a moment. This is a pretty large building. You arrive at a small door that says "Knock for Deliveries" above another sign that says "Authorized people only". It is currently closed.

Off to one side is what appears to be a makeshift break area. a couple of old chairs and a table have been set up under a canvas to serve as an awning. A couple of people in what appear to be kitchen uniforms are lounging about. One is puffing on a pipe. As you approach the door, one of them stands up. "What are you doing back here? This is for authorized people only, and you don't look liek staff or a deliveryman."

"Of course, of course." Chatwyn takes you up to the stairs leading up and has you follow him as he climbs to the Second floor. The Hallway is filled with identical doors, each with brass numbers. As you walk he tells you that "We have 20 guest rooms on each floor, for a total of 80. We're not at capacity right now. maybe half of our rooms are full. And many of those have more than one guest." Near the end of the second floor, he stops in front of a room with a rolling cart standing nearby.

On the cart are a number of cleaning supplies, as well as clean towels and sheets.
"This is the room." He unlocks the door. "Would you rather look around or speak to the maid first?"

Matthias puts on a disarming grin, he thinks. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder, though. He holds up his badge again, no reason he can see to be clandestine about things. "Terribly sorry, just having a look round. Investigator Rourke, seems you all have a dead body on the premises. What can you fine folks tell me about that, Mr. . . .?"
