Default Chapter 14.2: The Missing Halflings

    Sept 29
It is a muggy, foggy morning when the Sentinels regroup to investigate the missing halfling patrols. With no mounts, the Sentinels trek out on foot to find the cave they collapsed the large chunk of Nuitari's moon into. By late morning, they find the secluded cave, which appears still collapsed from the outside. At 100 meters away, nothing looks amiss. Sweat beads off of their bodies from the hike and the oppressive humidity as they debate their next move.

Seeing no immediate danger, Vort begins a Commune prayer and asks, "Is the source of the missing halfling patrols, nearby?"

Kalthanar shields his eyes from the sun, “No change here. The enemy must come from another source.”

Hrothgar awaits the result of Vort's commune. After the trickery of illusions in the Tower, he is far less likely to trust things at first glance for a time.

"Can you not take a small amount of time to see if there are any tracks nearby?"

Vortigern receives the otherworldly answer of "No." to his question.

Meanwhile, Katlhanar begins searching for tracks in the area. It doesn't take him long to identify that there has been some activity in the area, but not recently. Something has been in the area, and he doesn't think it's human or halfling. Kalthanar is still a fair distance from the cave entrance though. Most of the tracks don't appear to go to the cave entrance, but go off in two other directions.

Brandon casts Fly on Kalthanar. "Perhaps a better vantage point would yield further clues..."

OOC: Kal gains 60 flying speed for 10 minutes. He can double dash using his action and his bonus action for a total of 180 feet per round or 1800 feet per minute. If he goes straight up, he can reach 1 mile of altitude in 3 minutes, look around for 4 minutes, then spend the last 3 minutes of the spell flying back down.

Kalthanar flies northeast for 2 minutes (double dash for 3600 feet or roughly a half mile). He follows the tracks and then examines the location.

OOC: Follow the tracks northeast for 2 minutes. Then take a look around. Kalthanar can use a bonus action to dash so in essence his movement is actually 180 for dash + dash.

With the aid of a fly spell, Kalthanar flies upward and northeast, following one portion of the tracks he found. The tree cover is modest near the dried riverbed. After rising about 25' feet in the air, he can see over most of the area. He proceeds northeast and upward continuing to scan the area. It doesn't take long for his eyes (or any non-blind eyes) to find a gigantic hole ripped into the ground. He sees a large hole, at least 30' in diameter roughly 100 yards northeast of the collapsed cavern. Kalthanar had fought a gargantuan worm creature in the basement of the Tower. The tunnel here is larger in diameter than what he had fought previously. At this distance, he can't tell if it's man-made or not, but somehow knows that it's made by some kind of creature. He feels his heart sinking in an inexplicable way, and is overcome by a foreboding sense of dread that he can't shake just by looking at the unearthly hole.

Kalthanar reacts to the foreboding dread.

OOC: Charisma is definitely not a save I was expecting.

Kalthanar feels an unshakable sense of dread and does not want to proceed closer to the hole. It is a mixture of fear, despair, and foreboding of terrible things to come. He was already sweating due to the muggy heat, but now he's trembling as well. He hesitates in his flight.

    OOC:
Kalthanar has 1 level of dread. He must survive a Wis DC 16 save to advance on toward the hole.

Kalthanar retreats back the way he came. He was not willing to press on without the others present. The high elf flies back to the group and lands, "There is a giant hole to the northeast made by some creature perhaps a giant worm. The hole radiates magical dread and foreboding. It is quite powerful."

Vort asks his second question, "Is this giant hole that Kalthanar found to the northeast the source of the missing halfling patrols?"

Vort rubs his chin and then asks his final question, "Is the creature that created that giant hole that Kalthanar found, the source of the missing halfling patrols."

"Welp," Vort says, "Not sure if thats definitive or not, but maybe that isn't anything to do with the missing halfling patrols. It sorta sounds like the shard or whatever it is, is causing the hole, but not the missing halfling situation."

Kalthanar frowns, “So two threats at least. Vortigern do you have anything to counteract the magical fear?”

"Frankly, I suggest we leave it be and try to find the cause of the missing halflings. We can always return here if we need, but if the gods have said 'No,' then it is 'No,' right?" He looks to Kal and says, "Quick, look around some more before the spell ends and then lets see where we stand."

OOC: So far, Kal has flown 100 yards northeast and 100 yards back. 600 feet not counting the minor vertical elevation changes to rise above the trees. At 180 feet per round, that's 4 rounds plus 1 more to look around. 5 rounds. 30 seconds. He still has 9 and a half minutes left to fly around. Go take a look in the direction where the other set of tracks is heading. Get some more information before we decide what to do.
