    Default Dispositio Diabolum

Dispositio Diabolum is a campaign of nine adventures set in the Unquiet Lands' fairy kingdoms of Elveald and Pellamar, with occasional excursions to the cursed island of Tyaasi in the mortal world. These are sequential adventures for paragon tier characters primarily using the fourth edition Dungeons and Dragons rules. The gaming sessions are conducted as regular chat sessions using the Maptool virtual tabletop.

The campaign takes place five years after an earlier adventure, "The Autumn Knight," introduced this part of the setting, and occurs over the spring, summer, and possibly autumn. "The Autumn Knight" was run over the course of a year, from spring of 2010 through spring of 2011. "Exordium," the first adventure of Dispositio Diabolum, began a few months later, in summer of 2011.

This thread continues the earlier Dispositio Diabolum thread from our former site. We are currently on an extension of the sixth adventure in the campaign: "Confirmatio Ex Opus." Player characters started at level 11 and are now at level 14.

Default Setting - The Unquiet Land of Faerie

In the cosmology of The Unquiet Lands, "the Feywild," or simply "Faerie," is that portion of the world that was sealed away because it was too bright and sharp. An unstated corollary is that it was left unfinished. The substance of embodied creative mystery known as Arcana is closer to the surface of perception in the Feywild and many more creatures make use of that power source than in the mortal world.

    Power Sources
An important point to note about power sources is that they function equally well in the Feywild. However, just as more creatures tend to use arcane power, less creatures use divine power, and while religious establishments do exist (and will play a role in the adventure, as it turns out) they tend to be more subdued than they are in the mortal world. Martial power is the least changed in its manifestations. The spirits of the Feywild, the equivalent of "Primal Spirits," range in appearance from twittering fairies to noble eladrin to verdant, living mountains and other wondrous forms.

    Lands of Fantasy
In terms of the Feywild being unfinished, manifestations from the realm of pure fantasy can and do lead to a greater amount of general unpredictability. If the Elemental Chaos represents a randomness of form, the Feywild exhibits a randomness of concept. This leads to some general differences. One is that, although "sealed," it is actually fairly easy to find ways to travel to and from the Feywild and any of the other lands of the world. Even as the Feywild is said to be conceptually opposite to the Shadowfell, it is no great task to find a way to go from one to the other. Another difference is that the influence of this manifest fantasy leads to a higher level of technological and social advancement, at least in places. However, the land remains pre-industrial due to its small population and general disorganization.

Inhabitants of the Bright Kingdom - Seelie and Unseelie

The adventure is set near the border of the Bright Kingdom. The Bright Kingdom actually consists of two closely allied nations: The Kingdom of Elveald, and the Empire of Elphame. Both are ruled by eladrin that comprise what is known as the Seelie Court. All civilized peoples of the Feywild are known as Seelies, while outlaws and renegade hosts are called Unseelie. The party is composed entirely of Seelies, even if some characters might tread a little close to the boundary from time to time.

The Unseelie Court is composed of secretive, mostly disorganized groups whose activities range from merely failing to acknowledge the legitimacy of the Seelie Court, through simple banditry, to a shadowy rebellion. Unseelies are regarded as criminals by the Seelies, but there is no established protocol for dealing with Unseelies. In other words, it is not a crime in and of itself to have dealings with Unseelies. Being an Unseelie is, however, a social construct, so the more openly people deal with them, the more likely it is that they will earn the label "Unseelie" themselves.

The most visible inhabitants of the Bright Kingdom are the eladrin who make up both its commoners and its nobility, though it is sometimes hard to distinguish whether an eladrin is one or the other. Like many lands of the mortal world, the Bright Kingdom is far from homogeneous. Dragonborn, dwarfs, elves, goliaths, gnomes, half-elves, halflings, humans, and shifters can all be found there. So too can devas, half-orcs, and tieflings, though it is fair to say that they are very rare. The Bright Kingdom is not well-populated, though, and the capitals of Elphame and Elveald are no more than large towns in terms of population when compared to communities in the mortal world.

    The All-Seasons Church
The All-Seasons Church is the established religion of the Empire of Elphame. Its theology states that the four dominant gods are Corellon, Pelor, Sehanine, and The Raven Queen. Melora, known as the Endless Mistress, acts as a liaison between those four and the Feywild. Although she is below them in stature, because she alone directly intervenes, she is a much more significant figure. The priesthood of the All-Seasons church is known as the Drywkirdara. The Unseelie have their own mirror-image to this: their four chief deities are Asmodeus, Gruumsh, Lolth, and Zehir, with Kord as their go-between.

Default Setting - Gwyren Ogleth, a county in The Bright Kingdom

Gwyren Ogleth is a territory lying in the northern part of the Kingdom of Elveald, one of the two states that comprise the Seelie nation of the Bright Kingdom. To the northeast is the Kingdom of Pellamar, another Seelie land. Pellamar is at peace with the Bright Kingdom, but the rugged terrain here makes communication difficult; trade between the two kingdoms is accomplished elsewhere.

For the past three years, Gwyren Ogleth has been afflicted by devils issuing forth from the Forest of Tirsifa at its heart. Rallying many evil creatures to their banner and enslaving seelie and unseelie alike, the infernal forces are now capable of conducting raids along the entire forest border, which is now simply known by its epithet, the Devilswood. With even the county seat under a state of near-siege, it is well past time to strike back, but the question remains how. Despite their numbers, the leaders and their lairs remain largely concealed by the Devilswood's enchantments.

Some of the notable features in Gwyren Ogleth, in alphabetical order:

    • Devilswood - formerly the Forest of Tirsifa, this woodland north of Rience has thoroughly earned its new name over the past three years. It is home to a number of primal fey and other powers, but none appear to be able to contain the incursion of devils from its midst. As seen in the adventures "Exordium" and "Confirmatio," its internal geography does not match its external borders. Some notable locations within the Devilswood include:
      • Aldruin's Teeth - a monumental stone structure at the confluence of several major leylines within the Giants' Country; discovered to be a major outpost of the devils in "Confirmatio Ex Opus"
      • the Deep Colors - an uninhabited shrine to Corellon of uncertain location within the forest
      • Giants' Country - populated by all manner of large creatures, true to its name, it is far larger than the outside area of the forest.
      • Heart of Tirsifa - the lair of the primal spirit who rules the forest; also the name of the primal spirit itself
      • Northern Barrens - Centaurs roam here, as does Virdisceoth, a dragon said to be a threat even to archfey and primal spirits.
      • Plunder Marsh - The southwestern wetlands of the forest are reputed to be the home of a coven of prophetic hags.
      • Twilit Briar - the last territory under control of Maubpin, the Lord of Thorns, who once ruled all of the forest before he was replaced by the Heart of Tirsifa
      • Witch's Throne - The far western reaches of Tirsifa are the domain of the Finite Witch of Mists, Heldelaire Ilantasun

    • Highlands of Esk - forms a buffer territory with Pellamar, further to the north. It is thought, or perhaps hoped is a better word, to be uninhabited, but there are longstanding rumors that it is full of unseelie pockets of activity such as Gritchbone.
    • Eskaton - a town in the eastern part of the county, roughly the same size as Rience, dominated by a famous temple of the Drywkirdara wherein the Armor of Urien the Firbolg was kept as a relic before its theft was engineered by Fell in the adventure "Partitio."
    • Fell's Holdfast - a small, walled keep in the northeastern edge of the county, the Holdfast and its inhabitants are discussed below.
    • Gritchbone Vale - this unsettled valley to the east is a territory of the Unseelie; an unspoken reason behind the construction of the hold was to guard against possible incursions from the Vale. In the adventure "Propositio," it came to light that Fell was engaged in at least some diplomacy with the inhabitants of Gritchbone.
    • Hook Street - a road that connects Gwyren Ogleth with the halfling-dominated County of Talinoat to the northwest. It runs through some fairly uninhabited borderlands between the two counties before passing through Rience and finally ending at the gates of Eskaton. Talinoat is part of the border with Pellamar, and the normal trade and travel between the two is accomplished along this path. Portions of Hook Street are enchanted for fast, safe travel, but many of these spells are broken in the proximity of the Devilswood.
    • Norin Trugvad - a ruined settlement on the southern shore of Scawmere, just east of the Devilswood. It was established only a few years ago by a member of the Cordillerons in a joint venture with the Pteorthoirns, both dwarf clans, mostly to trade with Pellamar in the hope of obtaining mineral rights within that country. During its brief existence, it served as the last stop for traders who came out of Eskaton and helped draw them through the lands of Fell's Holdfast. At the start of the adventure "Exordium," Norin Trugvad fell to the devils, aided by treachery. Its inhabitants who were not turned were slain to the last. A mysterious "mireolith" was found in the heart of the ruins. The mireolith has since changed hands many times and its present whereabouts can only be guessed at.
    • Rience - a town of several hundred (it would be a large village in other lands) that serves as the county seat. It lies in the western part of the county. Despite its sparse population, it appears as a vast metropolis and plays host to the greatest seelie heroes of Gwyren Ogleth. At the recent council and concurrent tournament, described in the adventure "Divisio," an army of knights was raised here to bring the fight back to the Devilswood.
    • Scawmere - a lake forming part of the northern border of Gwyren Ogleth. A body of fresh water the size of a small sea and purported to lack any islands of note, little travel and less trade crosss it, especially after after the destruction of Norin Trugvad.

    Fell's Holdfast

    • Population: a little over 100
    • Government:
      • Formerly Fell, who was a tiefling wizard and a Praepositum Militum Arcana Emeritus of the Flamehearts, a powerful and somewhat secretive military order of Elveald. His position made him roughly equivalent to a baron in the orders of precedence for the Bright Kingdom, but without any hereditary right.
      • After his death, the holdfast reverted to being a possession of the crown. Riam Spiritride Rience, Countess of Gwyren Ogleth, has let it be known that she is petitioning the King to appoint her recently adopted son, Elusin Delautim-Rience Spiritride Rience, as the new ruler of the keep and its surrounding lands.
      • Fell's former chief advisor, Giersas Dancingfroth, is currently acting seneschal.

    • Defense:
      • a band of around 40 mounted warriors and apprentice wizards
      • fortifications
      • siege weaponry
      • There were numerous magical defenses, but many of them were expended or have ceased to function since the adventure "Propositio."

    • Commerce:
      • currently minimal
      • The settlement relied on a monthly trade caravan for general supplies, but these have been disrupted by near-constant raids from the Devilswood.
      • At present, Judaerif Faintsong, the Bishop of Eskaton, is arranging emergency supplies to be delivered with an armed escort on a regular basis from her town.
      • The holdfast contains a teleportation circle, but all teleportation circles in the county are presently sealed.
      • Additional income was derived from hiring out apprentices and from Fell's personal investments in other parts of Gwyren Ogleth but these are now in limbo with his death.

    • Organizations:
      • a hierarchy of apprentices and assistants to Fell, now reporting to Giersas
      • a domestic hierarchy run by the keep's majordomo, Miraolf Skyarc. The Skyarcs are a noble family from Elphame. Miraolf is slightly notorious for his pet panther.
      • a company of warriors contracted to defend the keep and led by the mercenary captain Girain Sundrynice. He presently holds the title of Captain of the Guard for the holdfast.
      • a small shrine of the Drywkirdara under the control of Hurrog the Grove Father. He is nominally the high priestess (normally only woman are allowed into this position) even though it is largely understood that he belongs to a different faith. He was the settlement's priest from long before Fell's arrival and was just conducting ceremonies based on the local, syncretic hodgepodge. However, with the construction of the keep, Hurrog got co-opted into the official hierarchy of the All Seasons Church.

    • Other Notable NPCs:
      • Billiaz of the Cordillerons - Former archivist of Norin Trugvad. By tradition, the archivist of a dwarf settlement must belong to the ruling clan, so she left and took up residence in Fell's Holdfast when control of the colony was transferred from the Cordillerons to the Pteorthoirns.
      • Ersius - An elf, and a prominent artist. He's worked on many notable buildings, including the Temple of Urien, in Eskaton. Fell hired him last summer to manage the decorations of the interior.
      • Gastont of the Cordillerons - A dwarf, he works as a paid guide or bodyguard. Between contracts and during winter, he stays in Fell's Holdfast as part of the castle guard.

Default Dispositio Diabolum PC Character Creation and House Rules

This is a placeholder post, since I am concentrating on getting the thread up to speed rather than actively recruiting at the moment. I will record the house rules for paragon bonuses and defenses here, though.

    Paragon Attack and Defense Bonuses

My intention is to make the player characters more robust with respect to their attack and defense bonuses against equivalent-level opponents. This will free up character feats for their original purpose of allowing unique customizations. It should also allow the party to defeat enemies more easily than before. If this results in faster victories, that is to be desired. If it results in easier victories without a commensurate increase in speed, I will make future encounters more difficult, which should in turn increase the rate at which the party gains experience points.

    Notes on Stacking
Bonuses of the same type do not normally stack. If you character is using an item with a +3 enhancement bonus, and applies a +2 enhancement to the item, the result is an item with a total enhancement bonus of +3, not +5. If your character has a +1 feat bonus on a certain attack or defense, and gains a +2 feat bonus to the same attack or defense, the result is a +2 feat bonus to that attack or defenses. If a bonus of the same type is meant to stack, that exception will be explicitly stated in the list below.

Armor is usually presented in two parts: an armor bonus and an enhancement bonus. The "plus" of an armor (or any other item) is its enhancement bonus. For example, a suit of wyvernscale armor +3 has an armor bonus of +9 and an enhancement bonus of +3. Barring any other considerations a character donning this suit of armor would see their AC improve by a total of +12.

Bonuses of different types do stack. If a character with the Lightning Reflexes feat (feat bonus of +3 at the Paragon tier) is wearing a light shield (shield bonus +1 to AC and Reflexes) and an Amulet of Protection +3 (enhancement bonus +3), this will result in their Reflexes improving by a total of +7 apart from any other types of bonuses they might enjoy.

Enhancement Bonuses Do Not Make Items Magical
An enhancement bonus is usually shorthand for a magical bonus applied to an item. However, it is not strictly the case. A character's enhancement bonus may be non-magical, or it may have to do with some inherent magic the character manifests. I'll leave the details for the players to define for their characters.

What this means is that an item with an enhancement bonus applied to it is not otherwise treated as a magical item. The most obvious situation where this matters is in the case of thrown weapons. A thrown weapon will not automatically return to a character's hand just because it has an enhancement bonus.

Attack Rolls Only: No Damage Bonuses

All attack bonuses listed here apply only to the attack rolls a character makes. Do not apply any of these bonuses to damage rolls.

    Paragon Attack Bonuses

Each player character may pick two bonuses from the following list:

    • a +2 enhancement bonus to all attacks your character makes, including unarmed attacks
    • a +3 enhancement bonus to a single weapon or implement your character owns; this bonus is applied to a single item, not a class of items
    • a +2 feat bonus to all attacks your character makes
    • the Master of Arms feat from Heroes of the Fallen Lands
    • one Weapon Expertise feat including the Expertise feats listed from Heroes of the Fallen Lands; this bonus can be taken multiple times for different weapon groups
    • one Implement Expertise feat including the Expertise feats listed from Heroes of the Fallen Lands; this bonus can be taken multiple times for different implement groups

    Paragon Defense Bonuses
Each player character may pick three bonuses from the following list:

    • a +1 armor bonus to Armor Class; this bonus freely stacks with other armor bonuses but may only be selected one time from the list
    • a +2 enhancement bonus to Armor Class that stacks up to a maximum of a +3 total enhancement bonus; this bonus may only be selected one time from the list
    • a +2 enhancement bonus to all Defenses other than Armor Class that stacks up to a maximum of a +3 enhancement bonus; this bonus may only be selected one time from the list
    • the Improved Defenses feat from Heroes of the Fallen Lands
    • the Great Fortitude, Iron Will, or Lightning Reflexes feat; this bonus can be taken multiple times for different feats

    Free Retraining
Player characters can change the bonuses they select each time they gain a level of experience. They may change any number of bonuses to any combination they see fit from each list at this time as long as all the restrictions are still followed.

If a selected bonus overlaps a feat that the character currently possesses, the character may freely retrain that feat to another allowed feat. Heroic tier feats must be swapped for other Heroic tier feats. Paragon tier feats may be swapped for Heroic or Paragon tier feats. This retraining does not count against the free retraining a character is allowed at each level of experience.

Default "Confirmatio Ex Opus," Third Session

The third session of Confirmatio Ex Opus will begin at 4:00 pm PDT on May 3rd with game-play to start no later than 4:30 pm. We will meet on #Roleplayerguild through IRC and conduct the game using Maptools version 1.3.b86.

I have chosen #Roleplayerguild for now even though it's not the default Tangled Web channel because it seems to be a little livelier, so you won't be guaranteed to be sitting around in silence while waiting for the game to start. You don't need to register anywhere in particular to use a given IRC channel, but I do recommend using NickServ to register the IRC nickname you wish to be known through.

The party is mostly outside the back of the Red Lord's banquet pavilion just as the evening meal is being served.
