Welcome to The Unquiet Lands' new home on The Tangled Web. The Unquiet Lands game forum hosts the long-running Dungeons and Dragons play-by-post game of the same name and serves as the home of two regularly-scheduled text-based chat games, one on alternating Saturdays and the other on alternating Sundays. This thread is an index for these games, present and past. All posts in this thread are updated on a regular basis.

    4. Background
The Unquiet Lands began in 2009 as a play-by-post fourth edition D&D campaign on a different site than the present one. Conceptually, I started work on the setting in late 2008, but some ideas and adventures are adaptations from scenarios I ran as early as 1987. As of this writing, the campaign is still alive and kicking, but several other games were hosted along the way and the forum space was used to organize and make announcements for them. This led to an understandable amount of confusion as to what belonged where.

This thread is intended to keep matters organized by clearly indicating which threads belong to the pbp campaign, which threads belong to the chat sessions, which adventures are current and active, and which ones are archival.

    5. What Are the Unquiet Lands?
At first, this was the name of the play-by-post campaign. However, as I started to develop other games in the same world, The Unquiet Lands now refers to my overall D&D setting. I wanted it to be something easy to enter, so it is a fairly "basic" land of swords and sorcery following many established tropes of fantasy and D&D: technology is pre-modern; there are gods and demons, dragons and oozes; people can travel to alternate realities; some individuals gain vast amounts of personal power through experience; and so on. However, the details of the individual locales vary to a significant degree.

Most games in the Unquiet Lands use the 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons rules set with some additions from 13th Age and those house rules that naturally accumulate over the years. This is not a hard and fast rule. I ran Traveller and Feng Shui adventures under The Unquiet Lands banner, and even ran an adventure using a "homebrew" hybrid system.

    6. Links to Major Threads - These threads have to do with my expectations as a game master, for players, and for their characters:

    7. Currently-Running and Upcoming Games
    I. The Unquiet Lands (The Aucothian Campaign)
    System: D&D (primarily Fourth Edition)
    Format: play-by-post
    Length: long-term
    Continuity: serial
    Style: campaign

This is the original Unquiet Lands play-by-post campaign, begun in March of 2009. It concerns the characters' flight from the Empire of Aucothia, a land beset by insurrection and religious discontent, to the fabled land of Faerie. Most of the threads here are devoted to this game. Out-of-character discussions are maintained on the Worm Delve Discussion thread.

The party began at 1st level and is currently 8th level. A new house rule has been adopted to rapidly increase player character level gain in response to the slow pace of play-by-post games in general. Players may now expect to gain one level of experience every one to three encounters. The current adventure of the Unquiet Lands, Panic in Lonely Places, began on October 21st 2016. It is expected to be the last adventure set in Aucothia.

    V. Dispositio Diabolum

    System: D&D (primarily Fourth Edition)
Format: text chat using MapTool, relying on IRC Chat when necessary
Length: medium - estimated to be a few more years of regular game-play for completion
    Continuity: serial
Style: short campaign of nine adventures

Dispositio Diabolum is a chat-based campaign that began and is primarily set in The Unquiet Lands' version of the Feywild. It takes place five years after The Autumn Knight, a one-shot adventure I ran from 2010-2011, but it is not a sequel in the sense that it follows from the storyline of The Autumn Knight. This is a paragon-tier campaign and player characters started at 11th level. Some players are using their characters from The Autumn Knight.

There are three confirmed players. With the current adventure, "Refutatione Principium," the campaign has entered its last quarter. Player characters are currently at level 15.

    XI. Hathor's Leap
System: Transhuman Outer Space Experiment (THOSE)
Format: text chat using MapTool, relying on IRC Chat when necessary
Length: playtesting and eventually one complete adventure
    Continuity: undetermined
Style: intermittent - based on player involvement

Players adopt the roles of sentient starships as well as assorted host bodies and small craft. The game will be designed in a modular fashion with players testing various aspects of it. The initial session was conducted on November 21st 2015 and the first playtest is currently in progress.

    XII. 495 Years in Scarlet

    System: Maid
    Format: text chat using MapTool
    Length: single adventure
    Continuity: one-shot
Style: intermittent - based on player request

This Maid scenario uses the Gensoukyou setting of the Touhou franchise. The mistress of Scarlet Devil Mansion is planning a special celebration and it is the duty of the player characters to see that it goes off without a hitch. One session has already been played, and it is available to be scheduled based on player request.

Default Games on Hiatus or Suspended

II. Romance of a Fallen Country (The Istaoan Campaign - Quest Adventures)
    System: D&D (Fourth Edition)
    Format: text chat using MapTool
    Length: long-term
    Continuity: serial
    Style: campaign

This is a chat-based campaign set on the island of Istao. Once unified as a single kingdom, Istao has been composed of a patchwork of warring fiefdoms for generations. Emissaries from one of the most advanced principalities, the players are striving to salvage what they can out of the growing chaos while confronting threats from the half-forgotten past. The party has just foiled a Tyaasian plot in the elven land of Addadun and is about to embark on a quest to find the lost ring of Addadun's Territory Lord.

At this time, the Quest Adventures have only two confirmed players and two more potential players, so there is room for expansion if the game leave hiatus. The Istao game thread is devoted to announcements concerning both Istaoan Campaigns. Participants are encouraged to commit to an ongoing game that meets semi-monthly on Saturdays or Sundays during the afternoon and evening, Pacific Time. This game is currently on hiatus.

Players who maintain characters in both the Quest Adventures and Mission Adventures enjoy shared experience point rewards. The party is currently between 1st and 2nd level.

    III. The Istao Missions
    System: D&D (Fourth Edition)
    Format: text chat using MapTool
    Length: medium
    Continuity: episodic
Style: intermittent campaign of nine adventures

Technically part of the Romance of a Fallen Country campaign, the Mission Adventures are chat-based games that involve a different, more fluid party of characters. Player characters are partisans of the Duchy of Calanque. A principality that rules the small islands of the Firth of Tanbryin in the northeastern region of Istao, Calanque founded a small colony to increase its influence on the mainland some years ago: the village of Elanglond. In response to raids on Elanglond from its neighbors to the east and west, the Duchy has gone to war with both of them. The party mainly supports the Elanglond Thaumaturgical Company, the arcane arm of the Duchy's military forces, though it may be attached to other companies from time to time.

As with the Quest Adventures, the Istao game thread handles announcements related to this game. Players who maintain characters in both the Quest Adventures and Mission Adventures enjoy shared experience point rewards. Subsequent characters retain their players' accumulated experience points. Players are currently on the second adventure, with characters at the second level. This campaign will regularly enter hiatus, to be revived when players express interest.

    VII. Old, Dark Road
    System: Feng Shui
Format: text chat using MapTool, relying on IRC Chat when necessary (originally text chat using Roll20)
    Length: up to three adventures
    Continuity: serial
Style: intermittent - three adventures in total, to be run at player request

Old, Dark Road is a possible trilogy of contemporary fantasy adventures using the Feng Shui rules, but in the context of a different backdrop. Set in Japan, the adventures follow a group of reincarnated heroes fated to oppose the flood of evil spirits prematurely returning from the netherworld. The second adventure, "Wings Over Rokkasho," concluded on October 24th 2015.

    VIII. Memories Remain

    System: D&D (Fourth Edition)
    Format: text chat using Maptool
Length: single adventure, option for sequels
    Continuity: one-shot or serial
Style: intermittent - adventures will be run at player request

Memories Remain is a setting to explore high epic tier (29th level) play. The first adventure, "Time of Torment," began on October 20th, 2013 and concluded on July 27th, 2014. The party successfully prevented the evil planet Allabar from creating a conduit between the Abyss and all the material planes. This game will now be on indefinite hiatus until such time as the players express interest in revisiting the setting.

    IX. Five Improbable Quests
    System: Far Eastern Wonderland
Format: text chat using Roll20 or Maptool
Length: single adventure, option for up to four more
    Continuity: one-shot or serial
Style: episodic - five adventures in total, to be run or ended at player request (requesting the adventure "Sunless Summer's Paradise" will end this campaign and begin the Mist-Snow-Moon sequel campaign)

These experimental adventures will be used to develop and play-test the Far Eastern Wonderland rules, using a setting based on the Touhou Project, created by ZUN / Team Shanghai Alice. The initial adventure, "The First Wondrous Legend," is loosely based on the story Highly Responsive to Prayers. The next four adventures planned for this campaign would be based on The Story of Eastern Wonderland, Phantasmagoria of Dim Dream, Lotus Land Story, and Mystic Square. The Mist-Snow-Moon campaign is based on the stories Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, Perfect Cherry Blossom, Immaterial and Missing Power, and Imperishable Night.

The first adventure/playtest began on March 29th, 2014 and concluded on December 6th, 2014, with a break between August 2nd and October 25th. The player characters successfully completed the "Demon World" version of the adventure.

    X. Standalone Adventures
    System: D&D (Fourth Edition / 13th Age)
Format: text-based chat, platform to be determined on a per-adventure basis
Length: single adventures, generally planned to be three sessions or less
    Continuity: episodic
Style: intermittent - adventures will be run for special events or occasions

Standalone adventures are envisioned to be adaptations of published short adventures using a standard cast of pre-generated characters. One standalone adventure has been run so far, "The Graveyard of Sorrows," for first level characters. It ran on October 12th and 19th, 2014.

    Default Archive of Canceled Games

Note that these canceled games date back to The Unquiet Lands' original site, before the move to The Tangled Web.

IV. The Order of the Green Lion

    System: D&D (Fourth Edition)
    Format: chat
Length: run of four short adventures
    Continuity: episodic
    Style: encounters and short adventures

This is the name for a series of thematically-linked encounters. It was intended to provide some variety from other games, and while projects were still in the organizational state. This game was planned around one to six players of 5th level, and was intended to be even more flexible than the Istaoan Mission Adventures. Organization and discussion took place on the Order of the Green Lion thread. Ultimately, I did not find extremely casual and pick-up games to be of interest; the encounters coalesced into something resembling a standard adventure; and players were more interested in the other chat games I was running. After having suspended the game for some time, I decided that it will not be revived.

    VI. Exit Visa

System: Traveller ("Classic rules" from the late '70s and early '80s)
Format: P&PG text chat, possibly moving to roll20 or maptool if the game resumes
Length: run of one short scenario and part of one adventure
    Continuity: serial
Style: one long adventure interspersed with short scenarios, possibly developing into a campaign depending on player interest

This was the first non-D&D game in the Unquiet Lands sub-forum. Exit Visa takes place in a mostly standard Third Imperium setting. At loose ends after retiring or being terminated from their lifelong careers, the player characters set off to find purpose and make new meaning for themselves as interstellar travelers. Note that this game is not based on the old Traveller adventure Exit Visa, and the choice of naming is coincidental.

I turned to these rules out of a sense of nostalgia, but I've now had my fill of Traveller. With the agreement of the players, this game has been canceled.
