Default Chapter 4: The Brave & The Bold (part 1)

The body of the massive dragon fills the entirety of the small cave. Over the course of the past five years, the growing colony of kobolds have laid gifts of food and scavenged treasures at his feet. This relationship has been a fruitful one thus far. The kobolds have been able to grow their colony with out threat from the Ironfang Legion. Under the protection of the territorial green dragon their warriors and leaders have been able to grow in age and wisdom while he has been able to build his first hoard and keep his belly full so far but that will not last for much longer. After recently been given a tome of knowledge, unknowingly scavenged by one of the scouting parties, the adolescent dragon has taken the next step to adulthood and progressing his ability to assert his dominance over the region. He thirsts for more knowledge and what this land held before he migrated here from the distant great forest of his birth.

“More.” Aeteperax said with a long and low voice. “I must have more.”

You have just laid your gifts recently pillaged at the dragon’s feet, but he doesn’t seem satisfied. What will you do now?

Takia prostrates herself before the great green dragon, lowering her gaze to the floor.

"Takia will get you more, Oh Magnificent One," she promises. "Takia will go to the end of the world to get you more!"

Still bowing, she sneaks a quick glance up at the dragon, trying to determine whether he's in a benevolent, question-answering mood. She decides to take a chance.

"Great Scaly One... do you know where Takia can find more treasure for you? Clan has searched nearby places very much, might have found all the good treasure. Takia wants to find His Gloriousness more treasure. Better treasure. Wise and Powerful Dragon Master deserves the best treasure."

Default Chapter 4: The Brave & The Bold (part 1)

The dragon’s scales seemed to shift in the different colors of the cave, making it difficult to determine where the dragon ended and the cave began. The green dragon has mastered his ability to camouflage into nearly every environment of the forest, not only mimicking the colors but the textures as well. All that he allows the kobolds to see periodically is his terrifying visage containing his massive horn which is as thick as a tree and his toothy maw that drips with a poisonous saliva.

The heat from his breath and body were enough to keep the cave warm during the winter. Now that it was spring the many kobolds are more than willing to leave the cave and scavenge farther afoot. The hoard yet was still nothing more than an amassed pile of things left behind by travelers or stolen from a stopped caravan. Aeteperax’s patience and appetite is waning with what the kobolds continue to offer him. He grows tired of near worthless items, he desires more. More weapons, more riches, and more knowledge. His siblings care less about such things, and would rather patrol their territory doing as they pleased. But not Aeteperax, he would out smart his foes as well as physically ruin them.

“There are lost towers and temples here in this land. Go and find them. Bring back what knowledge and treasures you find there. Do this and you shall be rewarded.” His disembodied voice resonates throughout the cave, further giving the impression of being a god for these creatures. “You two will take a scouting party. There is an old road to the west. Most assuredly from a crumbled empire. Follow it and you may find what you are looking for.”

    OOC
Ok so you have your heading.
You will be partnered up with one other scout leader (NPC) and 6 kobolds and 2 hunting spiders divided between the two of you. This will help give you some survivability and a chance for me to add some neutral roaming monsters

To give you an idea of your group’s capabilities, you’ll have “Slissas” a Kobold Blade
    , 6 Kobold Scouts
    , 2 Kobold Scalecasters
    , and 2 Kobold Bombers
    , and 2 hunting spiders

"Takia will follow this road. Takia and Slisslas will find the most glorious treasure that ever was, and will bring it back to His Emerald Majesty."

The kobold stands, still bowing at the waist, and scurries backwards out of the cave.

"Right," she says once she and Slisslas have left the cave. The look of reverential adoration she had when speaking to Aeteperax has gone from her face, replaced by a Very Serious expression. "We leave tonight. Set out at dusk. If anybody is late, Takia will curse them. The Grand and Glorious Green One needs this treasure provates. Postates. Po... soon."

Default Chapter 4: The Brave & The Bold (part 1)

Slissas, leader of the warriors is greatful to be selected to lead an exploration for these lost places, however he must go with this other female who knows nothing of fighting and scouting. Why was she chosen? Slissas was obviously unsatisfied with the decision, he would much rather lead by himself. “I shall lead us to great exploration and territory for our colony. Since I am the warrior I should make the decisions when to leave and.... and...... I think we should leave...... at dusk.” Slissas quickly takes the opportunity to seize control of their mission no matter how frail that control might be at the moment. “I will gather my scouts and the gear necessary for exploring. You gather who and what you must.”

Takia is no pushover and would not be pushed around by this worrier for long. Over the years the colony has been warrior led, yet with the presence of Aeteperax, that is slowly changing. Now that more of the kobolds have been able to grow in age and wisdom the colony is in a cultural shift of influence. Especially with those who gain favor with Aeteperax, who seems to be more often favoring those with knowledge. It just so happens to be that Takia is among those who he favors the most as his chosen Oracle. She shall be able to pull the best and wisest talent of her order, The Scalecasters. They will be able to find the most prized artifacts that are more than just simple mundane items. They and their scarlet spiders will be who she must first gather. Then the Bombers who have learned the art of fire and explosions from the goblins should help them open tunnels that have been long closed to the ages.

Default Chapter 4: The Brave & The Bold (part 1)

“Have you got your troop ready?” Slissas questions as he approaches with his own troop of six scouts, each looking more rugged than the last. “Slissas only bring the best; six of my most scarred scouts. Each with more scars than the last and proven in battle against the Legion.” In truth these were the only ones left to have faced the Ironfang Legion, and it happened only as they were running for safety. Granted they did help keep the colony safe until they stumbled upon the dragon.

Takia narrows her eyes at Slissas and waves an arm to the kobolds behind her.

"Takia brought alchemists and bombers. They mostly have less scars, because they know how to dodge things. Very good at their craft."

She tightens a loose backpack strap and pats her pockets to make sure she has everything she needs.

"We are ready to leave. Are you?"

Default Chapter 4: The Brave & The Bold (part 1)

“Slissas and his troop are always ready.” He confidently says as he steps out leading his troop ahead to scout the way. The collective troop almost vanished into the undergrowth as they left the firelight of their colony’s watch fires. It seemed that only Aeteperax knew how far they would have to go but would instead make his servants prove their worthiness by making that trek on their own. Only time will tell if they are well enough prepared for their journey. What rewards will the great Aeteperax grant them when they return?

Kobolds are hardwired to survive. All too conscious of their relative frailty, kobolds are cautious, hyperaware of their surroundings, and sometimes paranoid. That is probably why they feel more at home in the dark and prefer to hunt and move under the cover of darkness. Surprisingly they never seem to ever get lost even in the slightest. Many scientists jest that if you put a rat and a kobold in a maze the kobold will find its way out first then go back and eat the rat. Just follow a kobold moving through the snarl of her lair, and you’ll quickly realize two things: first, kobolds have an uncanny sense of direction; and second, you’re hopelessly lost. Kobolds’ direction sense goes far beyond not getting turned around easily—it also provides them with exceptional spatial awareness. This, once again, is easily demonstrated by a tour through a kobold snarl— the fact that they tunnel such complex labyrinths without careful planning or surveying is mind-boggling.

As for their colony they have an ingrained communal mind-set, they will put the welfare and safety of the tribe above all else. That’s not to say they’re mindlessly selfless or suicidal, however—why die for the tribe if someone else can do it? When push comes to shove (and it does), a kobold won’t think twice about sacrificing another to escape danger. To other kobolds, this behavior demonstrates quick thinking and the colony needs more of that.

Crowded into their narrow warrens, kobolds learn immediately that their lives belong to the colony, and that they both reap rewards from the tribe and have a duty to maintain it. Between their proximity to one another and their pragmatic lifestyles, kobolds know their own life cycles and physiology quite well. The few standouts in kobold society like Slissas and Takia tend to be individuals who have greater gifts from their draconic blood. A youth who hatches with the “jaw of a dragon” or “the wyrmfear” immediately becomes a prized member of the tribe. Being among the most fortunate and powerful kobold tribes are those who boast (and boast they do) of an alliance with a dragon. In these remarkable circumstances, the tribe’s lair connects to the dragon’s (whether by a single passage or with full integration.) Kobolds are absolutely subservient, focusing their efforts toward pleasing their draconic lord.

    OOC
Takia, what trait do you have that makes you stand out and place you as the chosen oracle of Aeteperax? Perhaps you could help come up with a name for the colony.

Please feel free to use the Kobolds of Golarion Supplement for ideas when further developing your character.

For some setting guidance and climate, think Montana/Yellowstone mixed with Eastern Europe for the Fallow Hills (Nirmathas equivalent in Golarion)

Talia takes a place in the middle of the group as they commence their journey. She's all too aware of how frail she is; she'd rather not be first in the line of fire in case of ambush, or get picked off from behind by any predators stalking the travellers. A few years ago her utter lack of any physical talents might have made her the first choice if the tribe needed to sacrifice somebody. But now she had magical powers, and that made her valuable. She could heal the injured with a touch, mend tools with a snap of her fingers, create fresh water during a drought. She was worth more to the tribe alive than she would be dead. She didn't doubt for a moment that Slisslass or the others would throw her to the wolves if they had to. But they hopefully wouldn't have to. Because she could use her powers to scare the wolves away, and then steal any food they left behind.

Default Chapter 4: The Brave & The Bold (part 1)

The Greenscale colony bids them luck and continues on with their daily tasks expanding the warrens and improving the defenses by setting traps in the surrounding area.

Takia’s acute night vision allows her to see nearly perfect in the near pitch blackness. The dark shapes transform into trees and rocks outlined in the little moonlight that bleeds through the canopy. There is no need to get their bearing from the stars due to their innate ability to navigate. They continue to meander westward toward the direction of the ancient road described by their Patron Dragon, Aeteperax. It is unknown how far they must go, but go they must.
