Default [ICRP] Chapter 0 - Greetings

The food and bed are appropriately priced low at the Dragon's Tooth Tavern, but at least you aren't paying. Within the last two days, you managed to land a contract to escort a historian into Durvale, leaving tomorrow morning. You'll be the first group to try to pass through the mountains that separates the megacity of Planestone from the northeastern human kingdom since Spring started to thaw the ice. Although you haven't met your charge yet, you like her well enough, given she has paid for your evening meal and lodging tonight—cheap ale is still ale and the warmth of the food and bed makes up for the stiffness of the meat and sheets.

Following the serving boy's instructions, you find the large room reserved for your party. Inside, you drop your gear by a bed and meet your companions for the first time...

Tycho drops his heavy pack on the bed and sets his spear, a worn and crude thing, by the side. Most of his belongings are in the pack as he traveled light. He sets himself down on the bed as well, sighing long as he gets to shift his weight off his feet. It had been a long tiring day already, as he had needed to rush to get here in time. Apparently he didn't have to worry, looking around the empty room. Judging by the empty beds there were more than a handful other mercenaries expected. Taking advantage of his temporary solitude he takes off his armor and walks over to the water basin; quickly washing off the day's grime and sweat he already felt much better. Digging up his comb and mirror he makes sure his graying hair is combed neatly. He stuff his armor in the pack and dresses in a simple yet clean travelers outfit. Already he feels like a new man.

You sense Smokebeak before you see him. A smell of acrid chemicals mingled with smoke ebbs into the room, accompanied by a clinking and clanking of glass and metal heralding his entarnce. Finally, a small, squat tengu huffs and puffs his way over to a bed. Like many tengu, he has dark colored feathers many singed and , with a beak the color of campfire smoke. He gingerly sets down his pack, then flops on the bed. "You know...there has to be a better way to get from... one floor to another... that isn't...stairs. Maybe...something with a platform? maybe powered by...explosives?" the tengu wheezes. Thenscribbles this idea down in a small notebook. he snaps the notebook shut. "Rudness. I am Smokebeak, I am an alchemist."

Tycho unfolds from his seat on the bed, rising higher and higher. He smiles confidently and crosses the room in two steps with an outstretched hand to shake.
"I'm Tycho, man-at-arms. Pleasure to meet you." he returns the greeting.

The third member in the party trudges her way resolutely through the doorway, not pausing as her eyes move over the room and its only two occupants. The young woman take a moment to walk around the big man blocking the walkway and deposits her backpack and shield under a bed against a wall. She sets down her mace and bow and takes a moment to shuck her mail onto the bed where she proceeds to neatly fold it and put it aside for later maintenance. Seeing the water basin has only been used a few times she brightens slightly and after taking out a rag gives herself a quick once over before sitting back down on her bed. She looks up at the two apparently greeting each other and raises a hand.
"If I interrupted anything, then I apologize. I'm Aldona. Who are you two?"

Smokebeak shakes Tycho's hand with his clawed one before turning to the newcomer. "Non, no. We were just getting aquainted. Pleasure to meet you, Aldona. I am Smokebeak. I am an Alchemist."

Tycho bows his head slightly as he looms. He doesn't mean to but he can't help do anything but loom. His head is between the rafters and while Aldona is a fierce tall woman he still dwarfs her.
"Pleasure to meet you Aldona. My name is Tycho. I'll be the muscle on this endeavor." Tycho says, introducing himself and extending a hand to shake. Just looking at the blonde makes Tycho slightly anxious; there's an intensity there, an edge. Like razor sharp steel. Well I'm not the only muscle on this job that's for sure.

The door to the bunk room is kicked open once more, and a ratfolk, not four feet tall, bursts into the doorway, posing with arms akimbo. His smoke-gray fur is wrapped in the white, gold, and red colors of the storm god. He sniffs the air and puffs up his chest before announcing himself, bathed in the warm light of the corridor behind him. "Behold, mortals!" he begins, with a quirked eyebrow. "You are in the presence of Riggett the Holy, harbinger of the Maelstrom, the Flamebearer, the—"

He abruptly points to the bed by the room's small window, "That one's mine." The cleric scrambles over to his bed, gear clinking unceremoniously, scrambling on his knees partway, passing through and around legs as necessary.

Quietly padding up the stairs, a tall, lanky goblinoid enters the common bedroom assigned to the sellswords. He takes a slow gander at each of the adventurers: the ratfolk clad in vestments scurrying towards his bed; the big human, yellow of hair, possibly female; the bird person smelling of heated metals, ozone, and a combination of chemicals that reminds him of a Dwarven grenadier division he had the honour to fight against... and, finally, the well-groomed absolute unit just looming there, head nearly scraping the rafters.

The hobgoblin slowly raises a hand, as if deliberately saving energy.

"Hail! I'm called Lazarz Vengeraev. Skald." His voice is that of an accented, mellifluous baritone.

His hunched form moves towards one of the two empty beds and removes his impedimenta, noteworthy among which are an odd tube-shaped bag he carries on the shoulder and across his torso and what seems to be his weapon of choice, something like an axe with the blade of a dagger and possibly the only item in his possession made out of steel. There's also a little basket that gives out a faint buzzing sound. His armour, a loose arrangement of scavenged iron, comes with a helmet or mask he does not seem to be removing. Once free from the weight, he stretches as he stands at full height, his spine making satisfying cracking sounds.

"Fantastic! Now we have both the Fire and the Music!" Tycho exclaims as he spreads his hands a little in a welcoming gesture. "My name is Tycho. This here is Smokebeak; he's an alchemist." He introduces himself as well as the tengu as he gives the birdman a gentle pat on the shoulder.
