    Default Chapter 1:Haunting Of Harrowstone

Mikial too reaches in to grab the next book. Hoping to find something, anything that could help him answer the many questions he had surrounding his mentors untimely and shadowy death. He sits back to give both he and Ken a chance to examine the book.

Ken gives a nod, closes his eyes then mutters an incantation. Once done his eyes snap open and glow with a brillent energy that mask his pupils.

Matthias looks quickly around.Noticing everyone enraptured in their reading,he also picks up the last book, with care due to its apparent age.

    Leda:

You begin by examining the outside of the book. The cover is a black leather from some unknown knobby-skinned creature but you find no marking on the spine or covers.

You open the book and a slip of paper flutters out. It says 'Return to Montagnie Crowl.'
Turning back to the book, you read the cursive scrawl on the title-page:
    ON VERIFIED MADNESS
    Theophilus Wenn
    Venture-Captain of the Pathfinder Society

The title is unknown to you, so you take a few minutes to skim a page here and there.
It seems that the book is a treatise on something which the author calls 'the Dark Tapestry' and concerning certain aberrations which he claims are related to it. Throughout the book you see several sketches of various horrific creatures.

    Mikial:

You choose the beige book out of the chest. You notice that the cover appears to have once been colourfully illustrated but all that remains now are faint smudges of reds, blues and greens. The pages are uneven sizes and warped with age or moisture, they are made of skin similar to the cover.

On the inside, you find the title branded into the page THE UMBRAL LEAVES and beneath it 'Praise to the Midnight Lord.'

As you page through the book you notice that all the 'writing' is branded into the skin and each page is only marked on one side. Though you recognize the letters as Varisian, they have unusual forms and you can read them only with difficulty.

You discover a folded note between the pages which seems to be serving as a bookmark. It reads 'Return to Montagnie Crowl.' You recognize the name. Dr Crowl is Professor of Antiquities at the university. You smile a little, remembering him as a eccentric but likable man prone to waving his arms enthusiastically when he lectures.

    Matthias:

The book doesn't appear to be as old as you first thought, it's sorry condition seems to result from the combination of poor materials and the incompetence of the bookbinder. The spine cracks dangerously when you open the book. This book will not take much more handling before it completely falls apart, already some of the pages have come loose.

Crude letters spell out the title on the first page. SERVING YOUR HUNGER. Beside it is a notation in Petros' elegant hand
    'M.Crowl
I'm surprised at you! This peice is only a translation -a very poor translation at that- and I suspect some passages have been entirely missed. This cannot be considered as a reliable source and has little practical value. ~P.L.'

On the opposite page, in the first clumsy handwriting, it says "Don't imagine the taste of your enemies' flesh. Experience it."

You're not sure if this is the sort of book you should be reading.... what would your Superiors think?

    Ken:

Initially, you senses are overwhelmed by a faint hum of magics emanating from various artifacts in the room but you carefully block them out and focus on the books before you.
The journal, the locked purple book and On Verified Madness are ordinary books. The Umbral Leaves and Serving your Hunger both emit magical auras.

You quickly turn to the places where you sense the auras and find several pages in each book covered in arcane magical writing.

(Do you want to do any further study before your spell finishes?)

OOC: Anyone who is interested may make a History OR Religion check to see if they know anything about The Umbral Leaves and Serving Your Hunger. Note, none of you have actually read any of the books at this point. If you chose to do that at some time, it would of course take several hours.

"Wait, please be careful. These two are giving off a magical aura. It could be dangerous give me a moment to check."

Ken pipes up fairly easily, his nerves not much of an issue when studying magic apparently.

    Default Chapter 1:Haunting Of Harrowstone

Mikial will try to make out what is on the page that is “bookmarked” and see if it had any relevance for the reason of marking or if it was simply coincidental.

Ruthis looks up from the journal he was reading, ' Was there a notable fire around here recently? '

Ken, you have detect magic for ten rounds.
1st round: You detected the presence of magic.
2nd round: You detect the number of magical auras (8) and the power of the strongest one (level 8).
3rd round: You discover the precise location of the auras.
4th and 5th round: You spend opening the two books to the right pages.

In Serving Your Hunger you see three spells called: Eternal Hunger, Urgathoa's Blessing and Consume.
In The Umbral Leaves you see five spells: Protect from the Holy, Dart of Midnight, Flensing, Shattering Word and Spiked Fist

In your five remaining rounds, you can make up to five Arcana checks to attempt to determine the school used in five of the spells.

Which book did you do your History check for?

    Mikial:

The page you found the note on is a section containing instructions on how to increase your pleasure while flagellating. You're not aware that Petros had any interest in this area and you're quite happy to believe that the note's placement is coincidental.

    Ruthis:

Kendra, who has been watching from the doorway, shakes her head "No, not in the eleven years that I've known this town."

    Default Chapter 1:Haunting Of Harrowstone

Mikial decides to keep the passage to himself yet winces and shudders at the thought of such a thing. “How ghastly and disturbing.” He slips. He replaces the note indicating the original owner and hands it to Ken for study.

“What do those books say?” Mikial asked the others, curious to what the other books contained. Hopefully something better than flagellating to help him get the disturbing image out of his mind.

Ken's attention is split between the historical context of Serving your Hunger and the auras emanating from each spell contained within. He feared what they were and what could happen with too much handling.
