"It's, uh, possible," Ignatius chimes in, looking... somewhat rested, at least. "We have at least a few avenues for tribute... It might also be possible to track down a powerful beast and slay it for the dragon to feast upon... Could I see the spellbook for a moment, please? I might be able to discern it's worth with a bit of time..."

The mask flips over his head, and once again his posture and demeanor changes to something more assured of his plans. They might not have everything they need on hand, but with a bit of time, they could gather plenty of tribute...

Authentic Forum Dice-roll Nature Check - (1d20+8) (7) [15] (What powerful beasts could roam around here that would be good for hunting?)

Assuming DM allows the use of "Nolzur's Marvelous Pigments" in such a way..
how about thousands of tiny beads (think of your normal ball bearings) made of gold?
They will be easy to draw (actually a tiny circle) that each would cost less than 25g (which is the limit).
Now about the number of em.. it takes 10 minutes to cover 100 square feet. So.. 4-5 sackfuls??
Again, that's an offering, and doesn't buy us goods.. it buys us the time to offer him the real "offering".
Our help to avoid been overthrown by Tiamat, and keep his dominion for as long as he pleases. [B]))

((OOC2/Edit: We can always draw a herd of cows or whatever for him to feast on :P ))
Drawing circles would probably yield something like coins/metal discs. Creating a clearly 3D object would take some minor skill at art, and might make it clear that these beads/balls are of strange provenance. How the dragon would feel about that isn't completely obvious.

You know the information contained in the monster manual entry for black dragons.

Some of the most powerful denizens of swamps include froghemoths, hydras, some of the stranger versions of trolls, some powerful versions of yuan-ti, giant crocodiles, hags, and the rare catoblepas. You're not sure which of these exist in *this* swamp, and you can only speculate which the dragon might find as a suitable offering. You do know - from having seen a few and rumors - that this swamp does have a large number of undead in it. There are powerful types of undead that could exist in this swamp. You really don't know what kind might be here that would qualify as "powerful" or that the dragon might even be interested in as an offering, if any.

How much of this would Grim know, considering that he is a cleric of nature and Bahamut?

Ilimistra gladly hands over the spellbook. Damned if she knows anything about it anyway; she has just been carrying it.

Mal will ask Snapjaw, "what are the dragon's favorite prey? Does he prefer his offerings alive or dead?"

He then turns to Ignatius, "its always strange to see your posture change so. Do you have any new insights?"

Snapjaw replies in his broken common: "Black Death likes big alive food. Plays with it. Likes food to know it will be food. Likes hot blood."

((OOC: So.. jewelry.. ok.. maybe a female dragon?
Did Vala, with her high perception check, noticed a.. hmm.. male reproductive organ, as the dragon flew above em? ))

"What is the name of the Dragon? What does it call itself?" Vala asks the group, and waits for them to ask the lizardman.
"Does it ever appeared to them in human form? and when the offerings are jewels, does it show any preference to what kind they are?"

You did not notice reproductive organs. Reptiles generally don't have those easily visible. "Never seen Black Death human," Snapjaw explains. "Does like treasure. Lots, big, shiny, treasure. Magic, if got."

"Besides tribute, the dragon may be interested in allies who can help it avoid unwanted future competition and foes. What the cult is doing is really not in its best interest and so it probably would have a personal stake in this matter as well", Grim shares his thoughts about the group's bargaining position, given the nature of black dragons.
