Throwing the grappling hook is a ranged attack to hit an AC 7 (5 + one range increment). There is no special penalty for failing (and the risk of failure is most likely just the auto-miss of a nat 1), so you can just keep trying until you hit. The only reason for why this is not just an automatic hit is that several tries take more time (which might make a difference...?).

Once the grappling hook is in place, the climb check is reduced to a DC 5. Again, failure will not give additional damage and you can just retry, but failure will mean that it takes more time and possibly makes more noise.

"C'mon now," Joyya says to the Executor Divine with an ill-advised tongue cluck. "I ain't any great shakes at it, but even w' one damned leg I'm better at climbin' than that!"

Paulo climbs up top of the ledge and begins to fasten the rope given to him by Shalelu to a nearby outcropping. Meanwhile, Katharina attaches her own rope with the grappling hook. Using the two ropes, Katharina and Joyya races to the top, with the peg-legged old dwarf ending as the clear winner ahead of the ill-tempered (but definitely not foul-mouthed) executor-divine. Amadeus grabs the rope vacated by Joyya and prepares to make his own climb up the rope.

At this point, you are all interrupted by furious roar coming from behind Paulo and Joyya on the top of the ledge: "YOU NO BRIBE ME!!! I SMASH YOU FOR SKULLTAKERS!"

Swiveling around, Paulo and Joyya, finds a big brute with two heads, standing 13 feet tall stomping towards you bellowing with rage. It flings two giant flails around it, and you have no doubt that it intends to use the fearsome wepons on you.

Paulo and Joyya are the first to react, along with Shalelu. However, Shalelu is still standing 15 feet below and she has no line of sight/effect to the enemy. Amadeus can take his turn to climb up the rope/cliff wall - climb speed is one quarter normal speed, so with a speed of 30, it takes a full round to climb the 15 feet to the top.

Paulo looks up at the sudden appearance of...whatever this was, and groans to himself. Bloody hells...Tall as a tree, and each head just as ugly as the other!

What in the lands was it carrying on about...bribes?? Skulltakers? Perhaps it was as dumb as it was ugly. They needed time for the rest of their party to assemble before venturing forth.

Having had enough of these damned ogres, he takes a challenging step forward, and without pausing to think too much, he yells back, "YOU DIM-WITTED OAF! We're HERE at the bloody REQUEST of the skulltakers!"

"Bloody 'ells," the dwarf grumbled, moving past Paulo and going to stand between the rogue, the rope, the party and the monster.

"Bribe?" he says loudly, throwing up his lion headed shield and crouching into a dwarf-y ball of armor. "Who said anythin' about a bribe? If anythin', you lot should be bribin' us fer haffin' ta look at yer ugly mugs!"

(OOC: Joyya takes a Full Defense action , moving his full distance toward the monster and in front of Paulo. He has an AC of 28 with the +4 AC bonus. Let the poundin' begin!)

    Default Round 1

Paulos voice breaks in mid-sentence and the last bit disappears in a fit of caughing - the big brute appears unimpressed - both heads of him - and rushes on. It moves directly towards the insolent dwarf standing in its way. The brute swings both flails with great skill, each hand seemingly moving independently of one another and as it nears Joyya, the punches start raining down upon his head, one after another....

The pounding strikes fall all around the dwarf or are repelled by his shield. When the dust settles, the dwarf still stands, stout and unharmed!

Amadeus starts climbing up the rope, swiftly and assuredly and reaches the top to witness the stout dwarf standing in the middle of the ferocious pounding.

Shalelu gets increasingly impatient with sounds of battle ringing down from the top and the two ropes currently occupied by Katharina and Amadeus. Perhaps surprisingly, she is no a particularly skilled climber herself - and she knows it - so she would also greatly benefit from the aid of a rope. She moves towards Katharina and says, somewhat impatiently, "Here! - let me give you a hand!" She offers to help pushing Kathy up the rope, if accepted, by Authentic Forum Dice-rollAid another climb - (1d20+1) [20] vs. DC 10. If the roll succeeds - and if Lady Durmond accepts the assistance offered - Kathy will get a +2 bonus to her climb check.

((Katharina is next in round 1 - the rest of you can take your round 2 turns))

When Katharina reaches the top, intending never to talk about the indignity of being pushed up an incline by an elf maid, she watches Joyya go toe to toe with the brutish two headed giant.
"Come on ser Loadstone! Show that piece of offal who's boss!" She switches tone as she shouts at the giant:
"Hey ugly mutt! You're about to drown in an ocean of pain and humiliation! I hope you don't survive because you'll never live down the trouncing you're about to receive!"
