    The kings and queens of Korvosa have long ruled under the shadow of the Curse of the Crimson Throne—an infamous superstition claiming that no monarch of the city of Korvosa shall ever die of old age or produce an heir. Whether or not there is any truth to the legend of the curse, Korvosa's current king is but the latest victim to succumb to this foul legacy. Now, the metropolis teeters on the edge of anarchy, and it falls to a band of new heroes to save Korvosa from the greatest threat it has ever known!

    The deadline has passed and the recruitment is closed for any new applications




    The technical stuff

    • System: Pathfinder
    • Medium: PbP
    • Number of players needed: 4-5
    • Application deadline: Friday, 11 August - deadline may be extended for a few days depending on interest
    • Posting frequency: Daily - slower during weekends and vacation/holiday seasons
    • Missing posts: Actions may be skipped or PCs may be NPC'ed at GM discretion.
    • Longer absence: Please give notice of longer absence in advance. Absence without notice will result in a reminder after 3-4 days and replacement after a week.


    Character creation guidelines

    • You should download and consult the (free) Curse of the Crimson Throne Player's Guide from here - it provides great help for making a character suited for the campaign
    • Start at level 1
    • 15 point buy
    • Core races only. If you are going human or half-human, also pick an ethnicity (most likely Chelish, Varisian or Shoanti)
    • In principle, all official Paizo classes are available, however selection is based on suitability for the campaign. If you are afraid that a particular class is unsuited for the campaign, feel free to run it by me.
    • Alignment: Leaning good'ish and no evil. Also, think carefully before going chaotic - you are supposed to be a hero of Korvosa trying to fight evil and restore order in the midst of chaos.
    • Two traits, one of which must be a campaign trait as detailed in the Player's Guide (see also below).
    • Max HP at first level. Roll or take average at level-up.
    • Roll for gold or take average (choose before rolling).
    • The campaign uses fast level progression.
    • House rules: There are no particular house rules related to character creation. Expect minor tweaks to standard rules to smooth PbP gameplay.



    Application
    For the application process, I do not require fully developed characters - I know how frustrating it can be to spend hours on a character only to see someone else get selected. The minimum requirements are listed below, feel free to develop your character further, but it will not have any effect on the selection.

    Minimum requirements:

    • Ability stats
    • Race and class (including class-related choices such as clerical domains or wizard school)
    • Alignment
    • Campaign Trait
    • General character concept: One or two bullets describing the defining characteristics of your character and how you plan to play him/her
    • Background: One or two bullet points in each of the following categories will suffice:
      • Past: Where do you come from? - did any monumental event shape your character? How does the campaign trait fit in?
      • Present: Why are you in Korvosa? What is your particular interest in Korvosa and why are you willing to put yourself in harm's way in service of the city?
      • Future: Where are you going? What are your long-term goals and ambitions? What motivates you?

    • Personality: One or two bullets on your character traits. I expect that your character's personality will shape your role playing - also (and in particular) when following this personality is not to the benefit of your character.


    Once the characters have been selected, you have at most one week to complete a full Mythweavers sheet.

    Character selection:
    Characters will be selected based on the following criteria in this order of priority:

    1. Interesting and believable characters: Characters don't have to be terribly unique or stand out in a crowd, but I find characters that are top-tuned for battle less appealing than well-rounded characters with personality and flaws.
    2. Character background: Characters should have a relatively close attachment to Korvosa - a good reason for being in the city in the first place and most importantly a strong interest in the fate of the city.
    3. A well-rounded party of characters: I will try to select a team of characters, which to the largest extent complement each other in terms of skills, personalities and combat abilities. Please be aware that the selected characters do not know each other from the beginning. Initially you will be thrown together by the common goal of dealing with Gaedren Lamm, but after that is accomplished you should be prepared to keep working together - if nothing else then united in your shared interest in the well-being of the city.

    Veterans as well as rookies are equally welcome to apply. If you are not familiar with the pathfinder system, there are plenty of helpful people around to offer assistance. However, you should expect to do some reading and learn some rules.

    What you can expect from this campaign
    This campaign emphasises roleplaying above whacking monsters and looting corpses. Players should be prepared to play to the weaknesses of their characters as well as their strengths. Challenges may be overcome by a wide range of means, including diplomacy, guile, cleverness and, occasionally, brute force. Sometimes, fleeing an overwhelming force is better than standing your ground in the firm belief that "the campaign is designed so that the monsters can be beaten by a party of this level". Never think, "what do the game designers expect my character to do now?", always think "what would my character do in this situation?".

    This is a largely urban campaign taking place in the city of Korvosa, although particularly later in the game, there will be forays into the hinterlands as well. It also means that the campaign's themes include politics, diplomacy, fighting crime and solving mysteries in addition to whacking monster. It is therefore recommended to take care to tailor characters to the setting and put some emphasis into skills and characteristics, which are not purely combat related.

    I tend to use visual aids, including tactical battle maps for resolving combat, as much as possible, so you need to be able to see embedded images, like the one at the top of this post. I like background and flavor information, so expect a lot of that. Since this is a published AP, there is a set story line and some railroading must be expected. However, I prefer this campaign to be driven more by the players own goals and actions and less by the typical "Sheriff X hires you to explore dungeon Y and kill monster Z".

    Finally, this campaign is a full adventure path, which means you should be prepared for the long haul. I am currently running another AP, which is still going strong with the original crew after 2½ years - and we are still not half-way through!

    That's a shame, mdh, I was going to PM you and see if you'd seen this.

    I'm looking at putting together a human Wizard - Illusionist now.

    Preference on mythweavers sheet? Regular vs. experimental?

    I'm interested...leaning towards Cleric, Inquisitor, or Alchemist...reserving this post for now.

    EDIT - Gonna go with a Alchemist (Chiurgeon) if that's good? Going to play her as a street surgeon, a go between the poor and the elven communities. She's a half elf. Will work out more as we go.

    I'm very tempted to apply. It would be a lot of fun to play an AP with you. I'll look over the campaign player's.guide
    I was originally thinking of alchemist or investigator, but I might change that since atlastrembles is thinking alchemist.

    My character's family is from the Northern lands. The Uther Von Strep had come to Korvosa to make a better life for his wife. Later he had a son named Bjorn Von Strep. Things where good for the Von Strep's and Bjorn had soon followed in his fathers foot steps and soon took up the trade of black smithing. His father had been a well known and liked black smith in Midland he was a part of the smithing guild that would help supply the Korvasan Guard along with five other smiths. Uther mainly did orders for swords and axes, and spears for the guard. He was liked because he never complained of the orders put in as well as the amount paid.
    Bjorn had fallen in love with barmaid named Alisha. They had hopped to get married and maybe start a family of their own one day. Things had gone good for Bjorn until his father had fallen ill and soon died of fever. Bjorn soon took over. Bjorn married Alisha and things where once good. One day after working hard in the smith Bjorn came home and found his wife murdered and his house burning.
    After months of drinking himself into a stooper and lossing his fathers business. One night when he had thought he had realized he had hit a low in his life he had seen a paladin Of Torag admistering justice by defending a woman and child against a group of thieves. That is when Bjorn knew he had to do something. He soon joined one of the Paladin orders. He wants to start by seeking out who killed his wife and we wants to fight for the weak and uphold the law. He completed his training and he is enroute to his first assignment.

    I think I too will apply. Thinking of a paladin,fighter, something that can be up front and be a diplomancer. This seems like a fun campaign!

    Edit: Armor Master Fighter, and from there I can grab diplomacy as a class skill.

    Great to see many old friends and new faces showing an interest

    @Knox: I don't have any strong preference for one over the other - take your pick.

    @atlastrembles: A Chirurgeon would fit nicely into this campaign. There are plenty of poor people in Korvosa, who cannot afford church healing and therefore depend on more or less talented laymen.

    @Danseredp: The most common Paladin order in Golarion is the church of Iomedae, but they do not have a strong presence in Korvosa - just a small shrine in the Pantheon of Many (which houses shrines for most of the deities that do not have any organised churches in Korvosa). One option could be to have studied under the tutelage of an old grizzled veteran of the Fourth Crusade in the Worldwound, who frequent that shrine. Torag is not a bad alternative for a paladin, but it is a dwarven deity. It could still work if your tutor happened to be a dwarf paladin - and it could be an interesting twist to work into your background and personality (a human with dwarven manners would probably raise a few eyebrows). Finally, if you would like to be part of a larger organisation, the most typical choice would be either the Korvosan Guard or the Church of Abadar (the largest church in Korvosa) - in either case, you would probably have studied at the Endrin Military Academy.

    @Gelatinous Mess and GhoulRising: Sounds like good choices - non-combat skills including diplomacy (for socialising and information gathering) and knowledge skills will be in high demand.
