Default (IC) Welcome to Laghara Academy

It's Sunday, August 6th. Your first day at Laghara Academy of Magic. The school’s forty-three new students have been let through the spiky front gates and onto campus. You have all been directed to a lecture hall in the main building.

The lecture hall is in the east wing of the building. It has a pink sandstone floor and enough wooden benches to seat a hundred people. Your fellow first-years are all trailing into the room and finding spots to sit. A few of them take out journals and pens, poised to take notes if necessary.

A half-elf man with sandy blond hair and a short beard is sitting behind a desk, flipping through a newspaper. Once everybody is seated, the blond man sets down his paper and stands up. He’s tall for a half-elf.

Hello, new students,” he says. “Congratulations on being accepted into the Laghara Academy of Magic’s smallest freshman class yet. Great accomplishment. I’m sure you’re all very proud of yourselves. I am Professor Ainsley. I teach Introduction to Scribing, which you all will be taking this semester. I am also in charge of discipline for first years. I hope that you will behave like mature, responsible young people and I won’t have to see you outside of my class. You all have a student handbook in your trunks up in your dormitories, but here are the main rules to remember:

Don’t cast spells, give potions to, or otherwise do anything magical to your fellow students without their consent. Do not harm any of your fellow students except in a school-sanctioned duel. Do not enter the Staff Quarters or the Graduate Student dormitories. Do not enter the restricted section of the forest without permission. Do not leave the school campus without permission. Do not bring guests onto the campus without permission. Do not leave your dormitory building between ten p.m. and five a.m without permission. If you need to use a workshop or laboratory, be sure to reserve it first with the signup sheet posted on its door. Don’t sabotage any of your classmates’ work. Do not bring any flames into the library; if you need better lighting to read under, just use an everburning torch or a sunrod. Finally, do not attempt to raise the dead without permission and supervision from a professor or from Headmistress Laghari.

Professor Ainsley puts a fist to his mouth to stifle a yawn before continuing.

Well, that’s all the important stuff out of the way. You all are free to explore the school grounds, minus the prohibited areas I already mentioned. Most of the upperclassmen won’t be arriving until tomorrow, but your prefects are in the student dormitories if you require assistance from them. Do any of you have questions before I let you go?

A mysterious first year wrapped in multiple cloaks and a hood is quickly jotting down note after note. His paper is copied with every rule stated by the professor and that professor's name.
Labi murmurs to himself as he writes each letter, "...Pro-fe-ssor-Ain-sley... ok got it..."
He worked hard to get here, and for the next few years, the young tiefling would have to put his nose to the grindstone in order to surpass his... racial heritage...

As the tall half-elf calls for any questions, Labi hesitates for a moment, not wanting to draw attention to himself, then raises his hand patiently.

What a long, far journey to the northern part of Meio; a land completely unknown, yet not too unfamiliar. That, Agwe took great comfort in. He was grateful for adapting to long distance foot travel, for he experienced lands he never knew. He was surprised he made it to the Academy in time, to be frank--he had distracted himself A LOT along the way, but he didn't regret it. If anything, should Laghara fail to serve its purpose, he felt he could learn far more from simply living in the wilderness. Possibly even introduce new plant life to Punari and bring further prosperity to his home. It was his duty after all...

Just like all the other new lands, Laghara's grounds felt very foreign. Though its lands were ultimately the same child of nature, he would need time to be familiar with it--maybe even become friends. Almost as soon as he arrived, however, he felt himself herded towards a seemingly important building along with the other...students, that's right. He is now a "pupil". He chuckles, remembering that despite the technicals of age, they were all still equal adults. Every time he thinks about humans--knowing how short their lifespans are--always makes him feel old, though.

Agwe sits next to no one in particular, simply choosing a seat. He gives a brief nod or a gentle smile to anyone who makes eye contact, but otherwise minds his business. He probably looks odd to everyone, considering his fishy characteristics against dark brown skin. His elders gave strict instruction to respect his superiors in Laghara...but as soon as the professor began to recite the rules, he snorts in frustration. This is all common sense; why did these rules need the attention? He drones out the rest of the speech, only paying attention to the name "Headmistress Laghari". He makes a mental note of it, since it's clearly an important name. He has no questions in mind--he just wants to leave at this point--so he patiently waits until they're all dismissed.

Lialda fidgets with the ring on her right hand as she listens raptly to Professor Ainsley's speech. Her blue eyes are shining with excitement. Her dark brown hair is braided, exposing her subtly pointed ears. She would be exceptionally beautiful even by lofty elven standards had she not been a half-elf. She scribbles down the rules on a sheet of paper. When Professor Ainsley asks for questions, she remains silent, and looks around for friendly-looking people she can approach after the lecture. Anyone who makes eye contact with her is treated to a radiant smile.

Ainsley nods towards Labi's raised hand.

"Yes sir... what about field experience? When can we expect to go out and perform tasks outside of school?"
"That depends entirely on how long it takes before anybody sends a request over to the school," Ainsley says. "But you should be allowed to start taking basic tasks in the next week or two, if we receive any. Until you have proven yourself highly capable you will, of course, be limited to lower level jobs so that you don't get yourself killed... or botch the job and give the Academy a bad name."

Owl listens carefully, but isn't taking notes. Anyone looking at the shaggy-haired elf can't tell at first glance if Owl is male or female, but extended observation will lead to the conclusion that "female" is the probable answer. She herself is looking at the other students, smiling at those who smile at her, trying to count how many different races are represented.

Owl (and anybody else who cares enough to notice) sees that a variety of races is represented among your fellow students. There are humans, elves, half-elves, dwarves, gnomes, a few halflings, some lizardfolk and grippli, a couple half-orcs, even one whole orc... as well as a few people whose race is more difficult to tell, such as the fellow bundled up in multiple cloaks and the blue young woman with the pupil-less eyes.

Labi will look around to see if there are any other tieflings in the audience of newcomers besides himself, or if anyone is trying to hide that fact like he is:

"N-no, no thank you." When dismissed Labi will go put his things in his room and then explore the campus.
