  1. Default Chapter 8: Traveling East

That next morning, the last the Moonlit Swords would spend at the Fall Moon guildhall for some time, brought the usual groans and moans of early morning waking’s. However, there was an air of excitement in the air as the group was finally going to get moving forward on their plan to finalize the relocation of the lidani women, then to move on to Stormgate where they hoped to find Johnny—who was apparently in need of rescuing based on group opinion.

During that breakfast, Calaral recounted that yesterday after morning meal, she had gone and done some light shopping, which included a potion of healing—flavored with a hint of cardamom as it stated on the label. With the journal book she had purchased, she took down notes and sketched anything regarding Fanuul’s home, Azragha. Although useless to sail by, the notes would come in handy to at least jog the memory. That night Cal had also listened for any rumors about the brain-eater murder, but no one seemed to want to talk about it.

Zavros on the other hand was once more down at East gate yesterday and finalized a contract, the best get could on such short notice, for 10 caravan guards to travel and protect the West Haven Outfitters Ltd. caravan travelling all the way to Stormgate. They were leaving this very morning, so everyone was at breakfast before the sun rose to be at the gates when it came time. This would also mean that the lidani refugees and Rhenger’s squire would have to be looked after separately as the caravan would not feed or protect anyone not on their employee roll.

Gerald was fully rested this morning as all he had done the entire day yesterday was some shopping for rations. The sly rogue remarked that he had found a shop a few blocks away called Non-Essentials, which had various foodstuffs, knick-knacks and such, but what he found interesting was they had rations from different races. Halfling rations were the biggest hit, as it mostly comprised of bacon and sausage, with lidani rations being the least favorite since it was completely vegan. In total, they had 13 different types of rations there, but all were the same price, just the ingredients were different.

Rhenger was a little sad in the face as yesterday he had gone to the stables to finally claim his horse and much to his chagrin, found that the groomsman had him removed the day he and the other servant left the city unannounced. His sparring with Albus later was almost lethal to the young squire as Rhenger took out his frustrations on his squire, but it was good that he was able to work through the anger without killing his squire,2 who had remained faithfully by his side.

Axar remained quiet all morning, his face bore a story of a beating he didn’t want to talk about, yet. Earlier in the day, yesterday, he had gone to hear any rumors about the brain-eater, but alas, no one was talking about it or had nothing to say, so he had nothing to share. He especially didn’t talk about his “date”.

Asher had spent all day yesterday at his business, working with a new employee by the name of Orwin, to run the business while he was out adventuring. Hopefully this new employee would prove to be as trustworthy as he was skilled in his craft.

Hildegard was very happy with her successes the previous day. She had singlehandedly landed a first mate position for Gallie aboard the Evening Star, a large galleon setting sail in a few days for Stormgate and beyond. The captain was so impressed by Hildegard’s recommendation, and the fact it was coming from a Priestess of Ceara, he couldn’t say no. Later that day she would find herself the recipient of a short investigation of the City Guard, questioning her if she had a license to practice miracle work in the city. After showing said license, they bothered her no further. The rest of her afternoon was spent helping the crew of the Hope’s Run, a small cog berthed nearby the company’s ship, the Wayward Wind. The former Vyssani ship languished in the impound area, but at least she was not being used by anyone and no one had come forward to make a legal claim upon her, but it was still early in the game on that account. On Hope’s Run, Hildegard was able to help heal the wounds of one of its crewmembers injured in repairing the ship and then further help the crew with its repairs. Before she left the docks to head back to the Fall Moon guildhall, she lucked upon an old lady fishmonger—well into her years, raising her grandkids since their mother died and father was away at sea. Spending 2g bought a lot of seafood for dinner that night. After dinner, and to the best of her abilities, she joined Calaral in listening for any rumors of the brain-eater, but none were to be heard.

Jade had hoped her performance in the valk-platz was good enough, and although it was competent, it wasn’t up to her usual standards. She did make 2gp in tips throughout the day, mostly in copper.

Althir, after having gone to Liu’s with Gerald and Terri yesterday, had spent the rest of his day meditating and studying his spells. That voice he had longed for, was silent.

Terri had, after her trip to Liu’s and having bought some more rations, traveled alone to Asher’s Glorious Gems, and inquired of their newest company member—who was mostly absent from group activities, about the tooth she had taken from the Vyssani corsair. Not having a license to practice miracle work yet, Asher could not pray for any divination about the tooth, but suggested not to swallow it. He could easily make a necklace and mount for it that day, but it would cost at least 1gp for the cheapest setting. It was up to Terri to decide how much she would spend as it would only take a day, enough time before they left the next morning. That night, last night, Terri staked out the Black Arrow Trading Co. headquarters, but saw no suspicious activity.

Their stories of the previous days told, and the last breakfast consumed at the Fall Moon guild, the group set out with all their gear and received a heart felt good wishes from Jacob. Once down at the East gate, Zavros went to confirm the contract with the West Haven Outfitters caravan and fell into step as the caravan leader barked out orders to fall into step. The caravan leader, Samus, reiterated that only the guards, you ten, get fed and paid and that the caravan comes first. Any deviation from that will get the group fired and their reputation besmirched.

Travel was slow, which was good since everyone was walking, and the caravan passed through the safe zone—an area of about 1000 yards surrounding the exterior of the city walls where no buildings or structures stood. It had always been this way for as long as anyone could remember. It was kept this way so any attacking forces would find no cover under a withering hail of ballista and trebuchet fire from the city.

At the 1000 yard mark, the first of the cottages appeared, lined along the Low Road and a signpost marked the entry into the village of Goodwick. It was a modest sized village of about 500 souls, populated with farmers that helped feed Jasrel and was named after its original founder, the late John Goodwick. A fortified manorhouse stood not far off the road and at this early in the morning, only traffic heading eastward was seen. Soon, at the far edge of the village, a toll was paid to leave—which Samus paid without quarrel.

The Low Road had been around as long as the city of Jasrel and Stormgate, its sister city, had been around, so it was well used. Every half days ride, or full days walk, there were rest areas. Nothing more than large turnouts and camping areas for the caravans and travelers, but there was a well. A small placard driven into one of the stones of the well denoted that the well was gifted by the Farmers of Goodwick United. All was quiet that first night and every night until they reached the Caravanserai late on the seventh day of travel and traffic was increasing in both directions as the journey continued.

The Caravanserai was split into two distinct areas. A large paddock to the north housed all the caravans and travelers coming from Stormgate and beyond. To the south of the road was the main complex which included a large paddock area for caravans and travelers arriving from Jasrel, a general store, clinic, an inn, trade center, caravanserai headquarters, and a fairly large flower garden out back. The area was bustling with activity as caravans started to arrive and jockey for room in the paddocks. Samus secured an area for the caravan in the south paddock and since there were caravanserai guards in place, security around the West Haven caravan would only require minimal attention. Splitting the group in smaller shifts, he left it up to the Moonlit Swords who would stay on guard duty, and who would get a break to partake of the Inn or anything else.

Zavros claps his hands, "Alright, we'll need two people on watch at all times, two at a time for two hours a piece and so on. I'll start first."

"Sounds good Zavros. I'm going to head to the inn for a drink if anyone wants to join me", said Gerald. He waits a moment before heading out.

Jade nodded at Zavros's initiative. "I'll do the first shift as well in that case." Jade was deeply interested in the many appeals the paddock had to offer, such as the inn and flower garden.

Calaral nodded. "Thank you Zavros. We will be back in ime for our watch." She looked over at the women then at Althir. "Please, if you can be so kind and show us the way."

Rhenger is weary from walking all this way in heavy armor, but it was a bit early to turn in. "I think that I'll check for caravans coming from Stormgate and see if there is any interesting news. Anyone else interested?"

Althir walked slowly as they entered the area set aside for travelers from Jasrel. He paused and took in the smells of the caravanserai. It wasn’t the sweetest smell, but it was the scent of home. He replied to Calarel, “Let’s stop my father’s abode first.” It wasn’t really a house, nor was it a tent. Althir always wondered why the master of teamsters lived in such a humble place. “Once I’ve explained the situation, he will be a good advocate for our cause if that becomes necessary.” Althir led the way slowly studying the people as he made his way to his father’s home. He tried to notice how much had changed since he left. He paused to greet people he met and introduced Calarel and the lidani women. He only explained that the lidani sought employment and a place at the caravanserai, but only if someone asked. If they asked about his return, he would only say he was on the way to Stormgate.

Hildegard thanks Zavros for his leadership. "I have 2 hours until my watch. I wish to see the compound's source of water, stream or well, and appreciate the garden. Will you join me?"
