Default Episode 2: The Raiders' Camp

When those of you asleep in the keep's guest rooms awake and exit your room, you see a young man in monk's robes with prayer beads hung around his neck. His leg is clearly injured, as it is wrapped in bandages and he is leaning on a crutch, but he seems eager to see you. He hobbles up to you and introduces himself as Nesim Waladra, a monk of Berdusk (a town that's a short detour off the main road from Greenest to Scornubel, several days travel away). "I've been waiting to ask you a few questions about last night, but the castellan told me not to wake you and to bring you straight to him before I bother you." As soon as everyone is out of their rooms (and Mindartis has found his way back from his nature retreat, assuming that's what he does), he leads you to the castellan, though he seems on the verge of asking you something the whole way. If you ask him to go ahead and ask you, he refuses, saying he must do as the castellan says.

When you find Markguth, he is with the governor out in the town talking to some citizens about plans to build better defensive measures around the town. "It's good to see you're rested and doing well," Markguth says. "Governor Nighthill and I have been discussing the raid. We were not the only victims. We have been hearing reports of raids on isolated homesteads and farms, as well as small villages. We were the largest target that we know of yet, though." [This scenario should sound familiar to Erevenn... check your character hook.] The governor is watching Markguth and nodding along as Markguth continues, "This might not be the end of it all, but we should do what we can to see what exactly it is that isn't over, if we can't end it. There's not a lot we can do here - we've got our hands full." He indicates the burned buildings and wreckage all around. "But you... I've never met anyone quite like you lot. I'm confident that you can at least find some answers. That big army and their wagons left a pretty big trail that ought to be easy to follow. If you can follow it and find out where their camp is, how many raiders there are, who their leaders are, what's motivating these attacks, and where they plan to strike next, there's 250 gold pieces in it for each of you. If you can recover some of the valuables that they stole, we'd greatly appreciate that, too. If there's anything you need to help you with this, just name it and we'll do what we can to get it for you."

[OOC: I have emphasized the key points of your mission for your benefit. The bold/underline/italics do not represent any special way that Markguth spoke those words. I'll be doing that again in a bit with Nesim Waladra's quest.]

Grim listened carefully to the debrief, and then said, "I'm confident that we can do what you ask of us. However, I must take you up on that offer for helping us prepare for this. Is there a diviner and an alchemist in the town? I could really use some divination tools, and we could use a few healing potions."

"By the way, how are the people who had taken shelter in the all faiths shrine?"

Markguth responds, "We have an alchemist. I don't know how his shop fared, but I can send someone with you to find it or to find the alchemist." Then his face seems pained. "The only places likely to have what you need for divining would be the wizard's tower - but it's completely gone and the wizard wasn't the sharing type - or the temple, and I'm not sure they would've had what you need even before last night. You can go and ask the two priests you saved... They're the only ones that were in town that made it out, as far as we know. The next cleric isn't due for a few more days, and he won't have heard of the raid, so he won't have anything to restock their supplies."

The young monk enthusiastically pipes up, "I know where the alchemist's is! I can take them there! Can I bother them - I mean, ask them my questions now?"

Markguth smiles at Nesim and says with a chuckle, "Sure. As soon as they're done letting me know what else they might need, you can be their visitor's tour guide."

Vala, still cranky for having no time to stay in bed after that an intence night,or even some breakfast, walks up to the new castellan..
"I suppose some rations and maybe a chance to restock our ammo would be nice.. also.. where i can find some vinegar? maybe some salt too.."

"None of those are a problem. I can have someone scrounge them up for you, as long as you're not too picky about the rations. How much salt and vinegar you looking for - and for what, if you don't mind me asking?"

OOC: If you don't already have them on your sheet, each of you can assume you now have 10 days worth of standard traveler's rations like dried meat and bread. If you rely on ammo or simple weapons, they can definitely supply you with those, too.
DM house rule reminder: As I think I've said before, I'm cool with you being as detailed and organized as you want to be with your consumables. Between retrieving them and finding new ones, unless I specifically say we're keeping track of them because we're in some sort of special circumstance (let's just hypothetically say a barren sea full of nothing but icebergs and monsters) you can assume you have what you need. If you enjoy keeping track of your ammo and supplies, you're welcome to do that, too.

"A big bottle of vinegar should be enough.. no need to be of a good quality.. and.. a pound of salt will do the trick." Vala sais
"You see.. it's not humane to leave our guests thirsty & starving.." Vala adds while she combs her hair with her fingers & sets them so she can draw her hood in place.

Markguth doesn't reply to Vala, but rather just looks at her. It's difficult to tell if he's confused, disbelieving, or disgusted at your thought processes. The governor chimes in for him: "Don't worry about the prisoner. He'll be taken care of."

"Oh no.. you see.. you asked us to do a job.. it would be at least inconsiderate not asking our guest about his cult's plans.." Vala sais
"For all we know, they might just wait outside the city, for us to come at them.. or they could have left a part of their force behind.." Vala continues
"If you have a problem with my methods, you can let me escort our.. guest, to a city and give him to the authorities there.. that will take the weight of your shoulders &
also will help us complete the mission you entrusted us with success, as the authorities of a big city will be more effective taking the information we need & then dispos.. ehmm..
deal with him as the law dictates.. or we could simply show our guest some hospitality for a few more hours & after he show his appreciation, you will be able to take care of him,
    any way you like."
    Vala concludes

"Believe me.. i'm in this job for years.. your best bet at this point is to gather as much information as possible.. & i believe that only 1.. maybe 2 people in this entire village,
know how to acquire this information."
Vala adds & concludes "..thats all i had to say.. you are the ruler of this place.. it is your responsibility to keep these people safe.."

Fade, who had been doing her best to stay out of the bright morning light spoke from a darkened alcove, "I agree with Vala, knowledge will be strength in the future, and any that can be gained or pried from him would be most valuable."

The governor continues to handle the conversation, though his face now has a more stern look to it. "I don't have a problem with your methods, and I certainly agree that knowledge is power. I have a problem with your timing. Some information your years of experience may not have taught you is that it's the rainy season here. They left a big track, yes, but a big rain could come any time and wash it away. Maybe they went just out of sight, or maybe they've covered 10 miles in the 8 or so hours since they left. The more time you give them to move, the less chance you'll have of finding them. If you want to interrogate the prisoner for a few minutes while your friend gets some potions and spell components, be my guest, but if you want extended time with him you'll need to take him with you, which would still slow you down. He didn't seem like he was too important to them to me, so I personally doubt he's privy to their master plan. If all you're concerned about is our ability to hold him and render justice, I can send for our headsman now and be done with it."
He crosses his arms and looks at you and Fade as though he expects further disrespect to his years of leadership experience and decision making.
